Kay’s Writings | Planning Model

This writing piece discusses the excellent Understanding by Design learning unit plan format developed by national consultants Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, a simple format for key learning concepts.  The Understanding by Design template sets the stage for teaching for understanding and sharpening the focus on Common Core Standards learning.   Wiggins and McTighe posit that students learn best when “understanding” is developed.  The concept of teaching for understanding, rather than rote learning, leads to retention and Standards mastery when the learning is well developed.  The Understanding by Design planning model is now used nationally, as the best curriculum design model.
