Attached here is a discussion of the Writing Standards and their underlying assumptions. These articles also present means to lighten teachers’ load in helping to develop student writing ability. Frequent writing with timely feedback has been seen in research to develop student learning, a Common Core expectation. Students must think through and develop ideas through writing. This article discusses how we can increase the amount and quality of writing without increasing teacher work!
Writing Part I: Common Core Writing Standards discusses each Standard. Ideas on bringing Writing Standards alive in the classroom are presented.
Writing Standards Part II: Re-Inventing the Process discusses how Common Core calls for a return to developing the writing process with students, avoiding the constraining formulaic writing promoted with earlier state tests for the limited types of writing required on those tests.
